A Body in Fukushima Japan & USA | 2022 | 107' | DCP | No dialogue | Chinese & English subtitles Director | Eiko OTAKE Award & Nomination | Museum of Modern Art's Doc Fortnight, Official Selection, 2022 (New York) Movement-based, interdisciplinary artist and choreographer, Eiko Otake traveled six times to the evacuated and desolate Fukushima in the wake of the 2011 triple disaster – earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown. Collaborating with William Johnston, a photographer and scholar of Japanese history from her second trip onwards, the film was crafted from tens of thousands of photographs and personal text. Accompanied by an original score, Otake transforms the surreal, irradiated landscapes into a site for performance. The artist’s body, embodying grief, anger and remorse, is captured with the cries of the Fukushima landscapes. A project of witness, remembrance and empathy, A Body of Fukushima grapples with the reality of human failure. With her own body as conduit, taking Fukushima to the world, Otake whispers her gentle but powerful protest as a body-worker. |

The Ferryman France | 2016 | 71' | DCP | English / Chinese subtitles Director | Gilles DELMAS Choreographer & Performance | Damien JALET Voice & Performance | Marina ABRAMOVIĆ Original Music | Ryuichi SAKAMOTO Award & Nomination | Outstanding Achievement in Dance Film Award, 'Choreoscope - Barcelona Dance Film Festival', 2018 Narrated by legendary performance artist Marina Abramović with score created by composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, The Ferryman is a lush visual and choreographic journey into the animistic roots of rituals, dance and sculpture, and their contemporary relevance. Rich with metaphors, Belgian-French choreographer and dancer Damien Jalet takes the viewer on an outlandish journey as a half-deer, half-hunter character across the threshold between worlds. Filmed in the stunning volcanic landscapes of Bali, Japan and Scotland and inside the oldest sections of the Louvre Museum in Paris, the ancestral spiritual bond between men and nature is portrayed here through a series of striking ceremonies (trance, cremations and sacrifices rituals in Bali, mountain worship in Japan) and contemporary dance performances. Oneiric and raw, blurring the line between archaic and contemporary, The Ferryman is both a fascinating documentary and a work of art of breathtaking beauty. |

Choreography composed to a suite by Edward Grieg and presented by the artists-dancers of the Polish Dance Theatre takes the audience into the world of flora. It allows to explore a day in the life of a plant from the moment it blooms to the end, drowned in warm nostalgia.

The creative environment "Old Factory" has a reinforced concrete "labyrinth-type" structure, showing a staggered perspective and density relationship between the pitches. Combined with the dynamic and static contrast between the body and the building, a logical relationship for the image is created. . Bringing on individual life stories and emotions, all the faded memories and uncertain future, happiness and sadness, they come and go through the spaces. At this moment, in an ordinary second, gathering and passing by each other, they compose the melodic rhythm by every step in their life. To create the moment for themselves together.

Rooms is an introspective dance portrait of Albert Tiong - an enigmatic figure in the Singaporean contemporary dance scene - as he turns 50. At another threshold of his life, he reflects on the intimate milestones of his career and the journey taken to arrive at the present moment. Through meta-interventions in three rooms, each encapsulating an era of his personal history, Albert revisits buried mundane memories that shaped his coming-of-age as a dancer, choreographer and educator. In this process of a phantom confronting his former self, he uncovers the dreamed paths banished over time and a future Zenith still unconquered.

The film consists of two, polar opposite approaches to imagery, that merge into an ambiguous yet enticing portrait of a woman. One one side, TA MARA is overwhelmed by an artistic frenzy that awakens her inner demon, on the other - she is calm, frozen in a state of perpetual waiting. These extremes, similar to the sides of Muskau Park, form one single unity. The expressed movements of female dancers from the Polish Dance Theater team reflect the elegance, precision and figurality of Lempicka's paintings.

The film is loosely based on the essay ‘On the Marionette Theatre’ (1810) by the Romantic, German writer and poet Heinrich Von Kleist. It expresses the urge of a person looking for completion: grace. The soundtrack interweaves extracts of the voices of interviewees. Kleist is convinced that a marionette has a kind of Gracefulness in itself due to its lack of self-consciousness and the fact it is moved by a ‘higher power’. Kleist believed that grace may be found in the effective unity between the puppet and its puppeteer.

“Morning” is a dance film dedicated to those we've lost to the Covid-19 pandemic. Produced by award winning dance filmmaking duo, Wilder Project, the film honors the grief that has accompanied us through this period. In an exploration of aliveness, transition, and catharsis, the dancers claw through different textures of earth and water with a sense of reverence and surrender. Set to a reimagining of the traditional Appalachian spiritual, “Bright Morning Stars”, “Morning” reminds us of the beauty of the sand under our feet and the breath in our lungs, and asks its viewers to consider that our collective reflection inspire us to create a world where we all can live.
In addition to our screening programs of Awards Finalists and Special Topics, we have chosen from our open call the ROLLOUT Official Selections, comprised of four thematic categories - “Macao Dance Film Pulse”, “China Dance Film Pulse” , “Dance to Remember, Dance to Heal” and “Ageless, Timeless, Boundless”, each showing how the hybrid art form of dance film can channel the unique intentions, identities, emotions and queries rising with relation to specific historical and sociocultural contexts, and we believe in the reflective, amending, healing, and remembering possibilities a dance film carries and generates. The ROLLOUT Official Selections will be screened at Casa Garden from 2 Feb to 5 Feb 2023.
