Jumping signifies the interaction of time, space, and body — it embodies both dance and the essence of imagery. Frames serve as the medium of imagery — allowing light and shadow to flow while enabling dancers to paint with their bodies. The Time Machine returns to the origins of "Jumping Frames" — constantly questioning the intersection of "imagery" and "dance." This allows time, space, and body to subtly traverse different narratives and scenes, bringing forth performance and imagination.
Since 2004, 20 years later, let us leap through time and space, traversing the past and future, and unlock the wonders of this "Jumping Frames Time Machine"! Guest Curators: Elysa Wendi & Jumping Frames – Hong Kong |

Program (1h12 min)
Guest Curators: Pedro Senna Nunes & João Dias - InShadow Festival – Portugal A selection of videodance films spanning different years, tracing the evolution of the InShadow Festival through a national lens. What stands out is not so much a shift in dramaturgical complexity, nor even a purely technical progression (though advances in recording methods are evident) but rather a fractured landscape of creative perspectives emerging from Portuguese artists, past and present. Some works are deeply rooted in distinctly Portuguese settings, while others take shape beyond national borders, suggesting an extension of our artistic reach into international landscapes. Each film engages with the body in its own way (as a solitary presence, in duets, or within static/shifting collectives), exploring different intensities, from fluid jazz-like compositions to raw and visceral forces. The body appears at times as the rhythmic core driving the narrative, at others as a gateway into alternate structures of movement and meaning. The selection shifts between color and black-and-white, 4:3 and widescreen, sometimes embracing, sometimes stripping away some of the most defining elements of videodance: words, music and movement. The session is meant to function as an imprint of some of the festival's most striking moments within the realm of Portuguese videodance while also gesturing toward new directions, yet to unfold. |
Quase Desabitada| Portugal | Daniel Matos | 2023 | 11'
You breathe out, I breathe in. Now forever. Breathing has been difficult lately, almost as difficult as breathing. Breathing has turned out to be an act of courage for which we're not prepared to take responsibility, almost as difficult as deciding to breathe, breathing so far that it's hard to hear ourselves breathing, to hear the other person's breathing as we breathe. |
Hannah | Portugal | Sérgio Cruz | 2010 | 6'
‘Hannah’ explores the ambition and dreams of Hannah Dempsey, a young dancer and athlete. The film is a celebration of the motion, energy and elegance of human movement, evoking the power of Hannah's adrenaline. This film reflects on the connection between art and sport, emphasising the athlete-dancer relationship. |
Complex of Shadow | Portugal | João Afonso Vaz | 2019 | 10'
A forgotten space is not a dead space. It is at the old War Heroes monument in Plovdiv that film and dance engage in a dialogue about space and its occupation. The feeling of the spirit of this place is in eternal mutation. The constant movement, the light and the lack of it, create new places that allow the body to grow, explore and adapt. Complex of Shadow focuses on the construction, destruction and overlapping of physical space and the construction of mental space, where light and shadow act as a physical force, movement as a transforming element and the body as a reflection of the life of places. |
Finimondo | Portugal | João Sanchez | 2023 | 9'
There is a phenomenon of optical illusion that occurs in maritime areas, in which mirages distort the appearance of distant objects. Lighthouses, seagulls, islands, rocks, creatures and other elements float in the air and transform. Ancient sailors called it Fata Morgana. Fascinating and mysterious, in which reality dissipates and is suspended in a Finimondo against the clock. |
Sing the Sand into Pearls | Portugal | Raquel Claudino | 2014 | 13'
Embraced in a dance of revolt, Sing The Sand Into Pearls tells the story of three women who escape a self-centred society and celebrate genuineness in a hidden ritual. Raquel Claudino makes her debut in a contemporary dance film, exploring the raw beauty of the artists in a city steeped in history and mysticism. Filmed in Lisbon, a flawed metropolis, the journey is narrated through a delicate dance that brings us into a parallel sphere. An experimental project in which international artists collaborate with the director to create a subtle yet daring story. |
Poti Pati | Portugal | Pedro Sena Nunes | 2018 | 11’
Poti Pati is a videodance that explores the intimate journey of a woman in the depths of a mine, sustained by a monologue that the character shares with herself, or with her double. Between light and darkness, she searches for something undefined: a mineral, someone, a trace of breath, or perhaps simply to disappear. breathing, or perhaps simply disappearing. Through the presence of obsolete machines and the (im)materiality of time, the film evokes memory and the future, questioning the link between our self and the other, the limits of identity and existence. |
